English 340: Hyper Hermeneutics

movie of the week (posted 29 September 2005)

I found the specific medium in which The Daughters of Freya was
presented to be extremely interesting. At times it seemed to be moving in real
time. Since it was such a long correspondence, it allowed me to become
comfortable with the characters, and somewhat attached. Whenever I told anyone
about the medium of Daughters of Freya, their eyes would grow wide
with interest and excitement.

There were some points that I thought were cleverly executed to show the story
in a singularly email environment. Most of our lives do not play out through
email correspondence, so since Samantha constantly had to keep her editor, Jane
up on how the story was progressing, it allowed us to see the story very well.
However, it's a little unbelievable that someone would allow this much of
their life to play out over email (does she have a cellphone? I'm thinking
she must have a bad plan). But this is necessary to serve the story and its
readers, and most of the time I didn't think about how much time she was
spending corresponding emails.

I wasn't that interested in the story itself. I am not a big fan of mysteries
and I knew right when Samantha's long lost love appeared that he was not who
he said he was. Much of the story was predictable, and a little cliché.
There did not seem to be anything in the story that grabbed me, other than the
medium. It felt to me like a lifetime movie of the week.
