Steve's research presentation (posted 2 November 2005)
Rather than post an annoying handout with a series of website addresses you'd need to type out anyway, I'll just provide some links to the sites I'll be talking about. My research paper will be a sort of genre study of blogs as a news/communications medium and their effect on political discourse.
The text I'm working from is:
"We the Media: Grassroots Journalism By the People, For the People"
Dan Gillmor
O'Reilly Media, Inc. 2004
It gives a brief history of independent/individual media, then goes very in-depth into the newest forms of media.
Here are the sites I'll be working with:
DailyKos: This is the largest and most popular with links to almost everywhere else.
Eschaton: Another of the major sites. Duncan Black, who runs the site, is a former economist and is heavily involved in Philly-area politics.
Huffington Post: Arianna Huffington's blog. There's an interesting celebrity/pop culture angle here, where some celebrities you wouldn't expect can do some surprisingly interesting work. Harry Shearer (of Spinal Tap and Simpsons fame) is especially noteworthy for some surprising things.
America Blog: Very frequently updated site with a great of deal of direct input from John Aravosis, who runs the site.
While there are many, many more, these four are good places to start (in terms of political blogs) and as you read them, you'll end up directed across a huge number of other sites.
