English 340: Hyper Hermeneutics

The fun of ready a novel (posted 10 October 2005)

At first, I was very frustrated by the style of this novel. I mean, I wanted to know what was in the suitcase at the train station. I wanted to know what was going to happen to the escaped prisoner. This was really frustrating, but I soon gave in and accepted that these wants would never be satisfied.

I changed my focus to the numbered chapters and began seeing this novel like a printed hypertext. I envisioned reading this novel on a computer screen and having the titles of these different novels come across as links that I could click on and see what the story was like.

I found chapter 8 to be the most interesting because it brought the story into itself in a way. The diary of an author writing about the idea of a book that this diary is already a part of brings up the old question which came first the chicken or the egg. It reminds me of Kauffman’s “Adaptation,” where the screenwriter is writing a screenplay about a screenwriter writing a screenplay.

After an initial annoyance, I really enjoyed reading a novel this week instead of the heavy theory.
