English 340: Hyper Hermeneutics

What does this all have to do with a car? (posted 20 September 2005)

The Lucky Ones…I certainly wasn’t lucky having to go through multiple scenarios of a family/neighborhood/ anyone who remotely came into contact with this family or whatever. Ok…so maybe I’m being a little harsh. This is after all related to hyper hermeneutics. The viewer is given an option to interact with the story if they so choose, which I think they would. As an added bonus you can go through all the characters at once through each of the five levels or follow one character through all five and switch. Either way it becomes tedious.

They only character that I really seemed to enjoy was that of Estelle. I have not the slightest inkling why she was included aside from the laugh value she gave to this weird interactive movie/story. Oh…Estelle if only you were my neighbor…I would never be bored.

On to my question, what does this all have to do with the car? Sure, Sharon gets the mariner for her graduation present but can’t drive it do to her over whelming sense of guilt. Yet the only person who is actually shown driving the car is Alice and she is leaving the weird neighborhood. And that’s it no more car. Question…did this make anyone want to find out more about the mariner. Did anyone even click the picture of the car? I did but it then took me to a movie, four to be exact of this “mariner.”

So, the big question of the day is why would the Mercury motor company employ this type of hypertext in order to advertise a car?

-Side note- I decided not to comment on “Same day test” because I am presenting on it tomorrow. I would also like to give my sincerest apology for this response. It cannot be helped. I was really irked by The Lucy Ones.

What does all this have to do with a car? Come on, Doris, isn't it obvious? I went out and bought one yesterday- so apparently the ad worked on me. But was it an ad? I don't understand why anyone at a car company would take the time and effort to stage this whole Lukcy Ones hypertext. (By the way this is a good time to note that although I didn't hate The Lucky Ones, I did want to KILL the narrator her voice is like nails on a chalk board.) The bizarre thing about the movie(s) is that I don't think that they would appeal to the mariner "type," maybe if this was a funky, unique, or hybrid car, but an SUV? I also don't fully get it, but I did enjoy it- I was eating lunch alone on campus and at least I had something to watch instead of the undergrad's mating rituals.
